Combat people can make money by spending more time disabling and salvaging/capping, with less jumping/docking. As things are, traders can keep up with costs and make profits by jumping to different systems and selling. My main concern would be the offset of gameplay styles. each minute passing is a day maybe? But maybe now buying and selling cargo take up a little time instead of instant? Or the time system would have to switch to realtime to days conversion. There is a lot of the gameplay mechanics that could be lost by changing the time progression system, or losing it altogether. No daily pay, no daily costs, no storyline or universe progression based on time and date (which is a thing), and not having malleable time based on how you play would eliminate certain methods of play as an option. Other Escape Velocity Nova like games are NAEV, The Ur-Quan Masters, nuu and Transcendence.

The best alternative is Endless Sky, which is both free and Open Source. Not having a time progression would eliminate dated missions, and several other mechanics. There are eight games similar to Escape Velocity Nova for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Linux, Mac, Online / Web-based and Android. So unless you made it so both players were lassoed to eachother where they both warped, and both docked (which is a very crappy MP mechanic), then you'd have to change time progression.
